Alice stood behind the register of the convenience store. There was a short line in front of her consisting of three people. The one before her had just paid for a six-pack of beer when he remembered that he wanted some quick-picks for this weekend’s lottery. She had moved to one side to ring up the tickets when the island across the bay went up in a giant ball of fire. She instantly stopped what she was doing, and every head turned that direction. A second later the shock wave rattled the large panes of glass that separated the inside from the outside.

One of the patrons, the one at the back of the line, swore loudly. Another dropped the two-liter bottle of soda she was carrying, causing it to rupture and spray sugary liquid all over the place.

Alice shook her head and went back to ringing up the tickets. “Warned ‘em,” she said to anyone listening. “No one trespasses there without consequences.”
